1 Week Home

I honestly can't believe Scrappy has been home a whole week.

 From working and keeping myself busy I am glad to have both Scrappy and Will back from the Eastside of the state. At first it was hard to see Scrappy in pain as he walked with assistance from Will. But as the day wore on I realized how happy he was to be back in his house with his bed. It is very important for us to start feeling like a family again. Will has been great at staying with Scrappy as his right hand man helping with trip outside at 4am. Will has even been great with my over-work lack of sleep breakdowns and we both have hope for Scrappy and for our family. I am so happy to see Scrappy and get a hug from Will after long hours of work.

I am also happy to report that Scrappy is in less pain. He himself has wean himself off the pain killers. The next steps are to get his staples out and a telephone consolation with WSU vet school. I know that he is in good hands and only time will tell us his full capability. I am hoping that he can at least walk maybe run : )

We have raised over $500 to the support scrappy doo fund. We are 4% away from our goal. And so thankful of everyone help, support, love, and vitual kisses. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Someone made Scrappy Doo's Day!

Earlier in the week, I went grocery shopping late at night. I enjoying going late at night because there are less people shopping and I have the whole store to myself. Anyway, I was looking for some surgical scissors for Scrappy and I asked the checker for some help. She asked if I was injured and I ended up telling her the story about how Scrappy was injured. Someone behind me in the checkout line overheard the story and while I was loading the grocery into the car they gave me a bone for my puppy she hoped he would feel better.

Scrappy Doo is home recovery, he most of his days in his new bed, relaxing. While Will spends his days cleaning the house, looking after Scrappy and taking him out every four hours, flipping him side to side and rubbing his swollen legs. I am so thankful that Will is able to stay home and Scrappy Doo is very well taken care of. For me, I have been working 3 jobs trying to support my puppy and my partner.

And I spend all of my free time smiling at him and sleeping, dreaming of Scrappy chasing squirrels.

Welcome Home Scrappy Doo!

Scrappy arrived in Tacoma at 4:45pm this afternoon. He was excited to be home and I was surprised how much mobility he does have. He is all smiles and currently sleeping on his own bed.

Although we are still exploring grants and other stuff in order to pay off the bill the total amount spent on the trip was $3320.32, less than what we initially expected. But Scrappy will need to have another surgery for his right hip in the next 3 months.

In the mean time we will spend as much time as we can with Scrappy. Will is going to be his 24-hour caregiver as I will be working long hours in trying to pay for his past surgery and future.

We want to thank the WSU Vet Hospital for taking great care of Scrappy. We are glad that Scrappy contiunes to touch people's lives.

Urinary Catheter Out

Latest update from across the mountain.

Scrappy urinary catheter was removed last night around midnight. Will was able to take Scrappy outside this morning and he peed! Scrappy is already trying to put weight on his back legs and moving around flipping side to side. It looks like at the earliest Scrappy will be on his way home tomorrow or Monday. I can't wait to see him.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, financial and spiritual support. The road to recovery is long and we still don't know if Scrappy will be able to run or even walk correctly again but we have faith that this was the right decision for all of us. Scrappy will be a joy to everyone he will meet and I look forward to show off my miracle puppy.

Scrappy post-surgery

Yesterday was an emotional hard day for Will, Scrappy Doo and I. Scrappy was taken to the WSU hospital very early in the morning and off to surgery before noon.

Being in Tacoma away from the action I realize how much Scrappy is truly apart of my life. It is hard to come home to an empty couch, empty water bowl, or to see an unmoved toy. I always have something to look forward to when Scrappy is around and it seems he is happy to see me. As soon and he circles around me and escorts me inside he immediately goes into the bedroom and grab himself a milkbone. He is rewarding himself for all the hard work it was to simply make me smile. It's hard to sleep in a bed knowing that Scrappy is usually sleeping in the bed right next to mine. I guess I have all these feelings because it has finally hit me. Scrappy may not be able to do everything that he used to do.

 I am imagining how much my life has changed in the past week in my life: new job; dog hit by a drunk driver; Will, Jim, and Scrappy taking an impromptu trip to Pullman; ending a job; and starting not one but two websites.

I just received a phone call from Will here is the Scrappy update:

Scrappy is happy to be out of surgery, he is smiling.

Scrappy ate for Will this afternoon; he ate Gerber Chicken and Gravy baby food and some cat food. Hopefully Scrappy’s urinary catheter will be taken out today. And if he can pee properly the earliest he will be home is Sunday the latest will be Tuesday.

With the help of the students Scrappy is standing! Doesn’t he look happy : )

Surgery Day

Yesterday morning, Scrappy arrive in Pullman at 4am and was taken to the pet hospital around 7am for an 8:30am appointment. After more x-rays and consultation with the surgeon it was decided that Scrappy should undergo surgery to try to repair the fractured hip bone. At 11am he was under the knife.

It wasn't until 5pm that we heard back from the doctors. Scrappy Doo has made it through surgery. The doctors said that the hip fracture was not able to be pieced back together and decided on another method, FHO. Scrappy will face a long road of recovery ahead. We need to start looking into hydrotherapy as well as an x-large doggie wheel chair.

The good news, Scrappy is alive. The surgery was less expensive then originally estimated. Somehow Will and I are surviving. I started a new job on Monday and I can't believe it is Friday. Will and Jim will be able to visit Scrappy this morning and talk to the Doctors. We will have a better idea later on, about recovery as well as when Scrappy can be transported back to the great state of Tacoma.

I look at this whole situation with positive light. Scrappy has helped so many people and will continue to help. I am already thinking of the possibilities of starting a Canine Against Drunk Drivers or Dogs Against Drunk Drivers. Scrappy is so great with every one he meets I am already envisioning him going to school and talking about disabilities. I guess in part, the possibilities are endless. We still are so thankful for all the support we have gotten so far and exploring other to get more support around this amazing creature.

Today I hope to continue working on making fliers, adding picturs to the blog, and working on obtaining a loan.

The plan

Scrappy has been apart of Will life since the day he was born six years ago. Scrappy has been apart of my life since the spring of 2009. Scrappy is my child. Will and I discussed all the options and decided that we plan to fight for Scrappy's life. We applied for grants set up a website for donations http://giveforward.com/supportscrappydoo

We are fighting for our dog's life.

Will and Jim (a dear friend from Guadalupe House) got into the car and drove Scrappy to Pullman, Washington last night in hope for a cheaper and posibble grant to perform the neccessary surgery for Scrappy Doo.

The Accident

On Monday March 14th, 2011 Scrappy and Will were near our house in Hilltop. Will was on his way to look at a pick-up truck and Scrappy was near his side. Scrappy Doo was on the roadway. Around 7pm, a drunk driver came down the road swerved and hit Scrappy. Will was extremly upset and his main concern was to get Scrappy to the Vetrinary Hospital. Will awoke me from a nap and we dorve to Summit Veterinary Referral Center with Scrappy in the backseat. He was triaged and x-rays were taken. It was discovered that Scrappy has a crushed left pelvic bone and possible hip damange as well as a right hip popped out of the joint.

Will's mom Wendy was able to join us at the hospital as we waited to see Scrappy. All three of us were escorted in the back room and saw Scrappy wag his tail as he saw us coming forward. We gave him kisses and hugs.

That night was bitter sweat. We were all excited that Scrappy survived his ordeal with a car, but immendiate concern with the amount of money treatment would cost. Unlike people hospitals, veterinary hospital only treat the animal once a deposit is made. I took out an additional credit card to cover the $1,700 it cost Scrappy to be seen by the doctors, for just that night.

Scrappy's Story

Scrappy Doo was born 3/15/2005 on the Key Peninsula, Wa. He was originally breed as a service animal. William Stocklin who at the time was living with the breeders took a liking to the lovable puppy,...aka...Sire Scrapps Alot.  The connection was made. Scrappy and William accepted each other and became life partners....this picture is with Jessica Arteaga

Throughout the years Scrappy has touched many people's lives, including myself.

Will and I met in the spring of 2009 at Guadalupe House, at the time we were both volunteering our time and energy for the poor. Scrappy Doo was an amazing addition to the house. He has this way with people, everyone loves him even if they do not like dogs.

In the summer of 2010 Will and I moved out of Guadalupe House and into a house of our own in Hilltop. Currently I work with the homeless, mentally ill, and family members of people who are experiencing major medical crisis. Will is working on improving his health. Scrappy is working on being a couch dog enjoying his own lawn, toy and treats.
